Common Goldenstar can be found growing wild on grassy foothills, even in undeveloped areas within L.A.’s city limits. Arising from an underground corm (geophyte) about the size of a hazelnut, it sends up tender green shoots soon after the first rains of winter and blooms in a spectacular corona of bright yellow, starry petals throughout the spring. Plant Common Goldenstar on gentle slopes, wildflower/bunchgrass meadows or mixed borders in full sun. Like all native geophytes, Common Goldenstar must be kept dry throughout the summer months after it finishes flowering. It also does well in decorative pots.
